A vote of "No Confidence"

By Mark Forsythe
The Kansas City Post

Mark Funkhouser has made it very clear that he is incapable of performing his duties as mayor without his wife's presence. Agree or disagree, the mayor has drawn his line in the sand. The City Council will move today to pass an ordinance barring immediate family members from volunteering in either mayor or council offices. My issue is not the ordinance itself. Of course this ordinance is directed at the mayor and his spouse. Anybody that claims otherwise is either disingenuous or a fool. While I personally think it's a good idea that immediate family members not be allowed to participate in the workplace I really have no passionate feelings either way about this ordinance. My issue is that the single biggest threat that has faced the Funkhouser administration so far has shown the mayor to be completely powerless.

According to the mayor the very existence of his administration depends on the failure of this ordinance. You would think that with his back against the wall, with all hope hinging on the defeat of this ordinance, the mayor would have mustered a veritable who's who of community leaders to come together and testify at yesterday's Finance & Audit Committee meeting. The leader of a major US city should be able to provide a show of force from among his constituency that would have even the most obstinate councilperson quaking in their boots. Spare me the arguments about the committee meeting being held on a workday. That has never stopped motivated citizens from showing up.

What I saw yesterday was not a display of leadership ability. It wasn't even a display of getting what should be his closest allies together. What should have been an impressive parade of former mayors, former council members, Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Council members, and powerful civic leaders turned out to be a few people that no one in the room had ever heard of. My favorite was the guy who said he was the CEO of the newly formed "United Organizations Coalition." Who? No, there were no impressive leaders eloquently stating their objections to the ordinance that the mayor finds so objectionable. There were no powerful movers or shakers demanding a horrible wrong be averted.

After yesterday's no-show of support, I have serious doubts about whether Mark Funkhouser can be an effective leader for Kansas City. Wednesday's dismal showing has made it evident that as the old saying goes the mayor "couldn't get a second in favor of motherhood." Indeed the blood is in the water and every mayoral candidate on the council is now moving behind the scenes to rally the check writers to their camp.

There is no more respect for the office on the 29th floor. And that is the biggest tragedy in this whole sordid mess.

Interesting take. I seem to remember Funk not having a problem calling up the insiders when he needed money. Now all he needed was a few minutes of their time and nothing. Not even a memo. Sad times for Kansas City.

Your just now coming to this conclusion? Funk has been done since we all found out about his healthy prostate.

The man is mocked and humiliated in his own home. You would expect him to command respect from an entire city?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:43 AM) :

Funk will probably file suit to enjoin the enactment of the ordinance.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (11:05 AM) :

I'm sure Funkhouser will probably do something else embarrasing after today's vote.

Interesting point about who showed up to testify. Where was the orange army? Not one big time politico? Very sad. Say what you want about her but Kay Barnes would have had people lined up out the door to testify.

Funkhouser is in a conflict with some council people who have already made their minds up about this matter of excising Gloria from City Hall.
Funkhouser knows that no "show of force", no matter how impressive, will alter the pre-made action that Marcasson has lead to a unpleasant conclusion.

I urge the readers of this blog to look at the good that Mayor Funkhouser, and Gloria has done for our city.

An examination of the "way things were done" in Kansas City before the Funkhousers - and the "way things are done" NOW, clearly show that the neighborhoods' interests, citizens views, and advocacy for the disadvantaged people in KC are now given priority over the old "it", ( Barnes favorite non-specific description of her pro-developer philosophy ).

Thanks for listening, BD

Leave it to the glass etcher guy to spew the party line. Funkhouser doesn't "know" anything. Marcason and Gottstein live and die by fundraising. If Funk brought out some deep pockets Jan and Beth would have snapped in line. That would have changed the vote and this ordinance never would have made it out of committee.

What about Jim Nutter? Supposedly Funk has him on speed dial and its widely known that Beth Gottstein refers to Nutter as "Uncle Jim." One call from Uncle Jimmy is all Funk needed to muster and he couldn't do it to save his dearly beloved. Sad.

Uncle Jimmy. That's funny. True, but funny.

And what is it that they have done "good" Bill The Banana Drummond??? Tell us!!!! I saw you at the hearing... you were their lead proponent. Pity the Funk and the Squid.

If the ordinance passes, we will all just have to wait to see what the Funk has "up his sleeve."

To the Funk I say... all that you have accomplished in the first year is nothing and maybe it's time to bring in a new team.

Every moment that Funkhouser spends dealing with issues created by his wife is time not spent helping this city.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:51 PM) :

Not trying to sound condescending Bill, but can you please list a few signigicant things this administration has done that are netting any positive results from this administrations. I understand he's been a little busy defending his wife, but maybe that's the point.

Anonymous DKC said ... (10:53 AM) :

Maybe if the Council and Staff were as worried about the city's five year plan rather than if Gloria wears shoes or not we wouldn't have to pay some outfit in Philadelphia 143,000 clams to do the job.

I think he's disabled. LEAVE FUNK ALONE!!!

:o)

Mark,
Many believe in the policies that Funk has implemented, that they are good for KC and long overdue. Just like many of the other mistakes, the issue with Gloria is not something most embrace. However, the support for a Mayor like the Funk far outways the options of the past. Is it a vote of "no confidence" for him or "no confidence" involving nepotism or other specific controversy?

"Many believe in the policies that Funk has implemented, that they are good for KC and long overdue."

That is the same vague proclamation of support that Gloria has been putting out in her now missing propaganda letter every week. "Many?" How many? Where was this legion of "many" when Funkhouser needed them most? Certainly not testifying at the F&A Committee hearing.

My vote of "No Confidence" is for Funkhouser across the board. His decision making, his leadership skills and yes even his administrative capabilities.

I wasted my vote for him last time out but I won't be making that mistake again. I would venture to say the "many of us" won't be making that same mistake in 2011.

Bill Drummond, friend of no one... what have the co-mayors done that is good for the city?

Speak, you of the banana eating monkey fame. Tell us what you know!

Anonymous inafunkabouttheinafunkaboutthefunk said ... (11:17 PM) :

Noooooooo!!!! Bill Drummond and InAfunk... found this read and will take it over with their zealotry. Damn! Is it possible to start a blog just for them to hammer out their issues so they won't have to pollute the bandwidth outside of Primebuzz???

Mr. Funkhouser is sick you all should leave him alone. His wife is sick you all should leave her alone too. The Glass etcher guy is a true believer he may be deluded but he suffers from a lack of critical thinking skills and he also can not help himself at his age. So you should leave him alone too.
