Quit your whining and do your job.
![]() By Mark Forsythe The Kansas City Post I've resisted writing anything about our dysfunctional co-mayors until now. I figured why write about the obvious? Besides, there is so much to write about! I wouldn't know where to begin. But two consecutive mornings of national news shows giving our co-mayors a platform on which to espouse their delusional ideals is too much for me to stomach. I grew up in a blue collar, Scotch-Irish Catholic family. We weren't poor, but we certainly weren't upper middle class either. What we did have were the values our parents taught us. A cardinal rule was "keep it in the family". Whatever disputes that may have arisen, money troubles, bad behavior, whatever; it was family business and never to be shared with outsiders. When you heard Barack Obama talking about being raised with "Kansas values" I can assure you that loyalty to your family was one of those values. Keeping it in the family also applies in the business world. Every quarter my company's legal department sends out an email reminding us not to discuss internal business with outsiders. Not with competitors, not with financial analysts, not with anyone. Sharing information could put my employer at a disadvantage in the cutthroat world of high tech. By taking their pathetic little show on the road, the co-mayors are definitely not keeping Kansas City business in Kansas City. They are embarrassing our community on a national stage. Even if Mark and Gloria are completely in the right, they have no business airing our city's internal conflicts in front of the world. But no, Mark Funkhouser chooses to show his leadership skills by going on national news shows and complaining about the mean old city council and how they're doing this and they're doing that and everybody's out to get him because they fear change and boo hoo poor me poor me. Nothing says "leader" like whining on national television because you can't have your wife with you. There is precedent I guess, if you look at history through the skewed vision of the co-mayors I believe you will find it was Patrick Henry that said "Give me liberty, or give me death". Few people realize he was talking about his wife, Liberty Henry. Our nation was founded on great leaders putting all aside for the sake of having their spouse by their side. Thus spake Glorathustra. With this latest very public tantrum Mark Funkhouser has left no doubt where his priorities lie. His priorities do not include upholding the dignity of his office and they're certainly not with protecting and promoting the image of Kansas City. No, Mark Funkhouser's priorities lie with his wife and his shrinking inner circle of sycophants who are still deluding themselves into believing that our co-mayors give a damn about anyone but themselves. |

post a commentThis whole thing simply amazes me. While on the one hand, I agree that whole volunteer ordinance is completely out of line, was poorly thought out, and was targeted directly at one person (which is illegal last I knew), I still can't get past the part of why we can't just move on.
At any point over the past 8 months, if any rational person would have been in this position, they would have just told their wife to lay low. Stay at home -- I'll call you. If you're going to write my blog and weekly newsletters, write it as if it is really coming from me. Keep a low profile, let it all go away, and then slowing creep back in the picture.
Instead, the mayor(s) have completely let two smallish things (this, along with a parks board appointment) become huge issues that have now defined and undermined the entire administration. It's sad really. I wanted him to succeed in that role. But it's become more and more clear that there is no way that will happen. There's too little credibility and focus left for it to succeed.
Too funny, Mark! You've written several times about Funkhouser and Squitiro, criticizing them, and yet you claim "I've resisted writing anything about our dysfunctional co-mayors until now."
I guess you won't be claiming that your writing is very memorable . . .
Back to Gone Mild Dan :) The Gruesome Two are pathetic and need to be removed before they harm anyone else.
Is is okay to call an african american woman "Bernie Mac?" Is it okay to use sexual innuendos around the office (and knowing the Squid, sexual innuendos at will????
That you can, with a straight face or pen (as it were) countenance their putrid behavior diminishes you.
Is there any government office in the US where light "sexual innuendo" is tolerated?
Is there any case where "sexual innuendo" in the workplace makes people feel more at ease?
Should a volunteer be permitted to come into city hall and make sexual innuendo and answer to nobody but her spouse (the only one who thinks sexual innuendo in the workplace makes things "less sterile")?
Notice to the 29th floor of city hall: SEXUAL INNUENDO AT WORK IS NEVER OKAY - esp when the taxpayers have to pay the consequences!
Who do you think the next Mayor will be?
A true leader doesn't have a public pity party.
This issue is not about volunteers or his "outside the box" ideas. It is about uncouth and offensive conduct that went unchecked.
Unfortunately, nobody will get behind a badly needed RECALL b/c in this bottomless economy any mayor will have to make lots of unpopular decisions. Right now, nobody in a position to step up and take Funk down is willing to place themselves in that position. All of the politicians in line for mayor are going to let him and this economy dig his political grave.
But, until he's gone we're in for more of this embarassing road-show.
Hey mom
We are on Jerry Springer.
Yea!!!
Kansas City made the national news.
You would think the Kempers would have hired a hit man by now.
lol
Looks like Funk updated his web site.
